Microsoft Windows Essentials is a collection of free applications that can prove to be quite useful to Windows users. Among the applications included in the Windows Essentials suite you will find Movie Maker, a free video editing tool you can use to create and share slideshows and videos. You will be able to easily come up with a home movie and then share it on YouTube, for example.

To get started with Movie Maker alone, you must get the Windows Essentials installer, run it, then select “Choose the programs you want to install”. This will allow you to install Movie Maker alone. Of course, you could install all Windows Essentials applications. As mentioned above, they can prove to be quite useful. The system requirements for running Windows Essentials are as follows: 32 or 64-bit edition of Windows 7, 8, or Server 2008 R2, 1.6 GHz processor or higher with SSE2 support, 1GB of RAM or more, monitor capable of 1024 × 576 resolution, graphics card that supports DirectX 9.0c or higher and Shader Model 2 or higher, internet connection.

The Movie Maker application uses a ribbon interface, meaning that at the top of its interface there’s a ribbon with buttons for all the functionality the application has to offer. If you find that the ribbon gets in the way, check the “Minimize the Ribbon” option from the “Customize Quick Access Toolbar” menu in the upper left hand corner.
Underneath the ribbon Movie Maker presents the images and/or videos you load and a preview of the movie you’re working on.

From a functionality point of view, here is what you can expect to get from the free Windows Movie Maker application: import photos and use themes to create a slideshow complete with music, titles, and captions; import and edit videos; import and edit audio; to quickly create a movie, use an AutoMovie theme; share your creation on the web.

Say you want to quickly create a slideshow for a special occasion that slipped your mind. All you have to do is choose the photos you want to use, add a soundtrack, pick an AutoMovie theme, and then save your creation or publish it online.

Movie Maker is a great tool for creating slideshows or movies, and it’s offered by Microsoft for free.

Pros

The system requirements for running Windows Essentials are not that high (Movie Maker is part of the Windows Essentials suite). The Movie Maker ribbon interface is user friendly. You are provided with all the tools you need to create slideshows and movies. There are several options for saving your creation and for publishing it online. Movie Maker is free.

Cons

None that I could think of.
